What it is
The spring sale of Vergos Auctions, Greece’s leading auction house, held annually at the company’s Athens premises. The catalogue typically covers Greek modern and contemporary art (Theofilos, Lytras, Volanakis, Tsarouchis, Fassianos, Tsoclis, Moralis), 19th-century European paintings with Greek subjects, antiquities (with documented provenance), maps and manuscripts (particularly Greek-language Venetian and Viennese press, 17th–19th centuries), Greek decorative arts, ecclesiastical metalwork, and Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons.
When & where
City: Athens, Greece.
Venue: Vergos Auctions premises (check Vergos website for current address and viewing schedule).
Frequency: annual spring sale (typically March–May), with a parallel autumn sale.
Why it matters for collectors
Vergos is the dominant in-country venue for Greek modern art and the most reliable Athens auction for items with proper Greek-state provenance documentation. International buyers should note: items may be subject to Greek export-licence requirements depending on classification.
How to participate
Catalogues are published online before each sale. Pre-sale viewing is held at the Athens premises in the days before the auction. Phone, online, and absentee bidding are accepted; international bidders typically register in advance. Settlement is in Euros.
Practical notes for international visitors
Athens International Airport (ATH) is well connected; central Athens is easily reached by metro. The pre-sale viewing days are an excellent opportunity to combine the Vergos exhibition with visits to the Benaki Museum, the National Numismatic Museum (housed in Schliemann’s residence on Panepistimiou Street), and the National Archaeological Museum.
