What it is
The Hellenic Numismatic Society (Ελληνική Νομισματική Εταιρεία), founded in 1970, holds monthly members’ meetings during the academic year (typically October through May/June). Programmes include lectures on ancient Greek coinage, Roman provincial coinage struck in Greek cities, Byzantine and post-Byzantine numismatics, modern Greek coinage from the founding of the modern Greek state in 1832 to the introduction of the euro, and member-presented research.
When & where
City: Athens, Greece.
Venue: typically the National Numismatic Museum (Iliou Melathron, the former Schliemann residence on Panepistimiou Street) or the Society’s library premises.
Frequency: monthly during the academic year.
Why it matters for collectors
The Society publishes Νομισματικά Χρονικά (Numismatic Chronicles), the journal of record for Greek numismatic research, and maintains a substantial library that is open to members. Monthly meetings are the most reliable way to meet active Greek numismatists, dealers, and academic researchers in person.
How to participate
Membership is open to interested collectors and researchers; annual dues are modest. Visiting collectors travelling to Athens during the academic year can typically attend a meeting as a guest of an existing member or by prior arrangement with the Society’s secretariat.
