The web’s most comprehensive collection of authentication guides for collectibles. Identify real from fake across cards, sneakers, watches, vinyl, comics, autographs, and precious metals.
Counterfeit collectibles cost the industry over $4 billion annually. Modern fakes are sophisticated: super-clone Rolexes, factory-perfect Pokémon cards, reproduction shrink wrap on booster boxes, and AI-generated autographs. This hub aggregates field-tested authentication methods across every major collecting category, written by collectors and verified against grading-company standards (PSA, BGS, CGC, Anchor, BBCE).

PSA/DNA Authentication Services is the autograph authentication branch of PSA. PSA/DNA stickers and Letters of Authenticity (LOAs) are the industry standard for signed memorabilia. PSA/DNA also offers in-person witnessed signings for highest-tier authentication.
James Spence Authentication (JSA) is one of the three major autograph authentication services (alongside PSA/DNA and BAS/Beckett). JSA Letters of Authenticity carry strong market acceptance, particularly for sports memorabilia and historical signed items.
Look for a numbered hologram from PSA/DNA, JSA, BAS, or similar service. The hologram’s reference number can be verified on the service’s online database. Without a documented chain of custody or third-party authentication, signed jerseys carry significant authenticity risk.
Provenance is the documented chain of ownership and authenticity. Strong provenance includes original receipts, professional photographs of use, statements from the original owner, auction house records, and team/league letters. Provenance is critical for game-used and historical items.
Off-center print not matching official samples, incorrect font kerning, missing micro-printing, weight mismatches (counterfeit coins), and poor color saturation. Authentication services have reference databases for comparison.
Beckett (BGS) provides subgrades (centering, corners, edges, surface) plus the gestalt grade; PSA gives only the gestalt grade. BGS Pristine 10 (all 10 subgrades) commands a substantial premium over a standard BGS 10.
Rarely but yes. PSA, BGS, JSA have all corrected errors historically. Always check the cert number against the service’s database. Cert-swapping (genuine slab, swapped card) is a known fraud.
Documented chain of ownership tied to verifiable past sales or original release. A Wagner T206 with provenance back to Honus Wagner’s family commands far more than one without history.
