The first square automatic chronograph

Released in 1969, the Heuer Monaco 1133B was the first automatic chronograph in a square waterproof case. It launched alongside the Calibre 11 movement, which Heuer co-developed with Breitling, Hamilton, and Dubois Dépraz as a direct response to Zenith’s El Primero.

The Steve McQueen association

Steve McQueen wore the 1133B in the 1971 film Le Mans, after which the metallic-blue square dial became permanently associated with the actor. Modern reissues lean on this connection, which has driven steady appreciation in the original 1969 to 1975 examples.

Identifying an honest one

The crown is on the left because the Calibre 11 movement is offset to put the pushers on the right side of the case. Original blue dials show a slight metallic vertical brushing; service-replacement dials are matte. An unmolested case still shows the satin top finish on the case sides.

How to identify this piece

Authentic specimens of the Heuer Monaco Reference 1133B are identified through a combination of physical characteristics, production-period markings, condition signals, and provenance documentation. Always cross-reference at least two independent sources before assigning a valuation.

Valuation context

Market value for the Heuer Monaco Reference 1133B depends on several converging factors: documented condition (typically expressed via a recognized grading scale), rarity within the production run, provenance and chain of custody, current collector demand within the collectible category, and macro-market trends. Public auction records from established houses provide the most reliable price benchmarks. Private-sale data is harder to verify and should be treated cautiously.
