The most beautiful US coin ever struck

President Theodore Roosevelt commissioned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign American gold coinage. The 1907 Double Eagle in High Relief was the result — 11,250 examples struck before the Mint reduced the relief because the dies could not handle production volume.

Why High Relief matters

The High Relief required three blows from the press to bring up the design. The result is a sculptural coin with depth and texture that flat-relief Saints simply cannot match. Saint-Gaudens died in August 1907 before seeing the finished coin enter circulation.

Wire-rim versus flat-rim

The earliest High Relief strikes show a thin wire of metal extruded around the rim, called the wire-rim variety. Later strikes used a wider collar, producing the flat-rim. Both are collected; wire-rim examples carry a small premium. Authentication by PCGS or NGC is essential at any grade.
