Pokémon cards print a small symbol in the bottom-right corner indicating rarity. From the original Base Set’s three-tier system to 2026’s bewildering hierarchy of “Special Illustration Rare” and “Hyper Rare” cards, the meaning of these symbols has expanded dramatically. Here is the complete 2026 decoder.
The Original Three (1999–2001)
| Symbol | Name | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| ● | Common | Multiple per pack |
| ◆ | Uncommon | ~3 per pack |
| ★ | Rare (Holo or Non-Holo) | 1 per pack |
The 2000s Expansions
- ★ White Star — Rare
- ★ Black Star Reverse Holo — Reverse holographic pattern; introduced 2003.
- ★H or H — Holographic rare
- ★★ — Ultra Rare (EX cards, e.g. 2003–2007)
- SH (Shining) — Special “Shining” cards in Neo Destiny and Shining Fates.
The Modern Era Hierarchy (2020+)
Common to Rare
- ● Common
- ◆ Uncommon
- ★ Rare
- ★ Rare Holo (full holographic pattern on the artwork)
Ultra Rare and Above
- V / VMAX / VSTAR / ex — Pokémon-V cards introduced 2020. ex returned in 2023.
- Trainer Gallery — Alternate-art Pokémon cards with trainers (2022).
- Full Art / Special Art — The Pokémon fills the entire card frame.
- Alt Art / Special Illustration Rare — Unique illustrated artwork, no border. The most desirable modern category.
- Rainbow Rare / Hyper Rare — Rainbow holographic finish, typically of an existing Pokémon V/VMAX.
- Gold / Secret Rare — Numbered above the set’s total. The “secret” cards.
The Hierarchy of Value (Modern Era)
| Rarity | Typical pull rate | Value tier |
|---|---|---|
| Special Illustration Rare | 1 per 4–5 boxes | Highest (modern) |
| Full Art ex / V | 1 per ~2 boxes | High |
| Hyper / Rainbow Rare | 1 per ~3 boxes | High |
| Trainer Gallery | 1 per pack at low rarity, 1 per ~box at high | Variable |
| Standard ex / V | ~1 per pack | Modest |
| Reverse Holo | 1 per pack | Low (commons) |
The Japanese vs English Difference
Japanese print runs are smaller, the rarity symbols are slightly different, and the Japanese-exclusive “AR” (Art Rare) and “SAR” (Special Art Rare) tiers don’t translate 1:1 to English. Many Japanese cards have a separate collector market that doesn’t track the English equivalents directly.
Counterfeits and Rarity
One of the easiest ways to spot a fake modern Pokémon card is rarity-symbol misuse — a fake Charizard ex with the wrong symbol size, color or placement. Always cross-reference with a known-genuine card from the same set. See our fake Charizard guide.
What to Pull For in Modern Sets
The single most valuable card in any modern set is almost always the Special Illustration Rare of the headline Pokémon — typically Charizard, Pikachu, or the set’s flagship. These have outperformed every other rarity tier for the last three years.
