Shadowless refers to the earliest 1999 print run of Pokémon Base Set cards, which lack the drop shadow detail on the right edge of the artwork window that was added in subsequent printings. There are two Shadowless variants: 1st Edition Shadowless (with the Edition 1 stamp) and Shadowless without the stamp. Shadowless examples are significantly rarer than the later Unlimited print and command substantial premiums, particularly for the Holographic Charizard.

Shadowless refers to the second print run of Pokémon Base Set, produced after the first edition but before the unlimited print run that filled out 1999. The defining visual difference is the drop shadow on the right side of the artwork window: shadowless cards have a thin, almost vanishing shadow, while unlimited cards have a thicker, clearly visible shadow. Shadowless cards are unstamped — they do not carry the Edition 1 mark — but they retain other features of the early printing including thinner text fonts on the HP value and a slightly different copyright date arrangement.

Shadowless cards sit in value between first edition and unlimited prints, typically commanding two to three times unlimited prices for holographic rares. Authentication relies on examining the shadow under magnification, checking the back rosette pattern, and comparing the colour saturation against verified examples. See our Pokémon Base Set buyer’s guide for the full print-run breakdown and identification checklist.
