Every fandom has its own language. Here are thirty terms that show up across the multiverse — defined in plain English, no gatekeeping, no jargon for jargon’s sake.
Condition & Grading
- Mint / Near Mint: Effectively perfect condition, indistinguishable from new.
- Deadstock: Original, unworn, unopened — usually applied to sneakers and apparel.
- NOS (New Old Stock): Vintage item that was never sold or used.
- VG / VG+ / VG-EX: Very Good — visible wear but structurally sound.
- Slabbed: Encased in a sealed third-party graded holder (PSA, CGC, BGS, Wata, etc.).
- Raw: Ungraded, no slab.
Authenticity & Risk
- Provenance: The documented history of who owned a piece before you.
- Reproduction (Repro): A modern copy of an original — sometimes legitimate, often deceptive.
- Restored: Fixed up after damage; usually lowers value vs. original condition.
- Trimmed: A card that had its edges cut to look higher-grade — a major no-no.
- Frankenpiece: An item assembled from parts of multiple originals.
- COA: Certificate of Authenticity — only as trustworthy as the issuer.
Market Talk
- Grail: The single piece a collector would do almost anything to own.
- Pop Report: The number of items that exist at a given grade — lower pop = higher rarity.
- Comp: A comparable recent sale used to estimate current value.
- Ask / Bid: What a seller wants vs. what a buyer offers.
- Spread: The gap between ask and last sale.
- Flipping: Buying with the intent to resell quickly for profit.
Fandom Slang
- Chase variant: The rare alternate version of a release that fans hunt for.
- Booster / Pull / Hit: The act of opening a sealed pack and finding something good.
- Sealed vs. Loose: Still in original packaging vs. removed and displayed.
- Whale: A high-spending collector who buys aggressively.
- Holy grail / White whale: The piece you may never actually catch.
- Ground score: A genuinely rare find at a yard sale, thrift store, or estate sale.
Storage & Display
- Toploader: Rigid plastic sleeve for trading cards.
- Penny sleeve: Thin protective sleeve cards go in before a toploader.
- Mylar: Archival-grade comic book bag material.
- Acid-free: Paper materials that won’t yellow or eat your collectibles over time.
- UV display case: Showcase that blocks ultraviolet light to prevent fading.
- Climate control: Temperature and humidity-managed storage — the secret weapon of long-term collectors.
