Pablo Picasso, Vollard Suite etching
Picasso’s Vollard Suite — 100 etchings made for dealer Ambroise Vollard

What it is

The Vollard Suite is a series of 100 etchings made by Pablo Picasso between 1930 and 1937, commissioned by the Paris dealer Ambroise Vollard. The series covers themes of the artist’s studio, the Minotaur, the rape of Europa, and portraits of Vollard himself. Editions of 260 plus 50 deluxe impressions on Montval paper were planned, though Vollard’s death in 1939 left distribution incomplete; Henri Petiet later distributed many.

What drives value

Individual prints from the standard edition (numbered 1-260) sell for €15,000-80,000 depending on subject. The famous “Faun Revealing a Sleeping Woman” or Minotaur compositions fetch the most. Deluxe versions on Montval with full margins and signed in pencil reach €150,000-300,000. Complete sets of 100 are essentially museum-tier — €5-12 million.

Authentication

Picasso Administration registration is essential — they maintain the catalogue raisonné of all genuine prints. Bloch, Geiser, and Baer references catalogue every state. Pencil signatures are studied closely; Picasso’s signature evolved through the period. Sotheby’s, Christie’s, and Phillips have specialist Picasso print departments — buying through them with full provenance is the only safe path.

Storage

Conservation framing with UV-filtering glazing, museum-grade rag mats, climate control. These prints have no margin tolerance for damage; even minor foxing reduces value materially.
