Mexican 8 reales of Carlos III
Carlos III 8 reales — minted in Mexico City for global trade

What it is

Beginning in 1772, the Mexico City mint produced 8 reales bearing a right-facing bust of Carlos III on the obverse and the crowned Spanish arms with two pillars on the reverse. These “portrait” or “bust” dollars circulated globally, with Chinese chop marks frequently applied as merchants tested authenticity. Pre-1772 “pillar” issues are even more sought after.

What drives value

Mexico-mint Carlos III 8 reales in VF trade for €150-300. Higher grades reach €500-1,500. Chop-marked examples have a small premium for the historical evidence of Asia trade. NGC- and PCGS-graded Mint State examples consistently set records at Daniel Frank Sedwick, Stack’s Bowers, and Heritage. Rare assayer/date combinations command 5-10× premiums.

Authentication

NGC and PCGS encapsulation removes most counterfeit risk. Modern forgeries (Chinese and Eastern European) are increasingly sophisticated. Weight target is 27.0g; fineness .916. Key verifications: assayer initials, mint mark (Mo for Mexico), and edge ornament. Buy through specialist firms — never raw from general antique sellers.

Storage

NGC/PCGS slab is ideal. Raw coins go into PVC-free flips with desiccants. Toning develops naturally and is preferred when even.
