Spain 1850 first postage stamp
Spain’s first postage stamp, issued 1 January 1850

What it is

Spain’s first postage stamp was issued on 1 January 1850, featuring a left-facing portrait of Queen Isabel II. Six values were issued in the inaugural set, but the 6 cuartos black is the most-collected. They are imperforate, printed by lithography, and used cancelled with a pre-printed araña (“spider”) obliterator that is itself collected.

What drives value

Used 6 cuartos black in fine condition trade for €30-80. Mint never-hinged examples are €600-1,500. The 5 reales red and 6 reales blue are key values, with mint examples reaching €15,000-30,000. Covers (envelopes with the stamp tied by cancellation) are 5-10× higher than off-cover examples. Plate varieties and rare cancellations command large premiums.

Authentication

Spanish expert Comité de Peritos (Edifil), CEM, and individual experts like Graus and Comex provide certification. Edifil catalogue numbers are the standard. Forgeries from the 1860s-1890s exist; modern photogravure reprints can confuse beginners. Buy from established Spanish stamp houses like Filatelia Llach or Soler y Llach with expertisations.

Storage

Hawid or Showgard mounts, archival album pages, dry storage. Spanish 19th-century stamps used acidic ink that can migrate; isolate from other stamps. Foxing is the main enemy.
