PSA slab elements: cert number (verifies authenticity at psacard.com/cert), grade (1-10), label generation (older labels can carry premiums), qualifiers (OC = off-center, ST = stained, etc., reduce value 30-70%), and population report (rarity at each grade). PSA-9 examples with low population at higher grade can outperform higher-grade examples of common cards. Always verify cert before any high-value purchase.
Reading the Cert Number
Every PSA slab has a unique 8-9 digit certification number on the label. Verify any slab at psacard.com/cert/[number] before purchase. The system shows: original grade assignment, date graded, current population at that grade, and any notes. Cert verification is the single most important step in slab purchase — counterfeit slabs exist and cert verification catches most.
Label Generations
PSA has used multiple label designs since 1991: green label (1991-1998), red label (1998-2000s), blue label (modern). Older labels sometimes carry “OG slab” premiums of 10-30% from collectors who prefer aesthetic period continuity. Recent slabs in the new “Lighthouse” labels (2024+) are the current standard.
Grade Definitions
PSA 10 (Gem Mint): virtually flawless. PSA 9 (Mint): one minor flaw. PSA 8 (NM-MT): two minor flaws. PSA 7 (NM): noticeable flaws. PSA 6 (EX-MT): light wear. PSA 5 (EX): obvious wear. PSA 4 and below: progressive damage. Half-grades exist (8.5, 7.5) for borderline cases.
Qualifiers
PSA assigns qualifiers when a card meets grade criteria except for one specific issue: OC (off-center), ST (stained), MK (marked), MC (miscut), PD (print defect), OF (out of focus). A “PSA 8 OC” is generally worth 30-70% less than a clean PSA 8. Many collectors avoid qualified cards entirely.
Population Reports
The pop report shows how many examples of a specific card exist at each grade level. A card with “Pop 15 at PSA 10” (only 15 known PSA 10s) is meaningfully rarer than one with “Pop 1500 at PSA 10.” Pop reports drive pricing for high-grade modern cards. Note: pop reports increase over time as more cards are submitted; “low-pop” advantages erode.
Reading Color Bars
PSA labels include color bars indicating special features: rookie card designation (R/C), holographic features, and special editions. The flip side often includes additional grading notes for borderline cards.
Common Slab Authentication Tells
Authentic PSA slabs: precise sonic-welded edges, embedded serial numbers visible in raking light, holographic security features on label, consistent label printing quality, accurate cert verification. Counterfeit slabs typically fail one or more of these checks. Never buy a slab where seller refuses to allow cert number verification.
