A perforation gauge is a measuring device used by stamp collectors to determine the exact spacing of a stamp’s perforations, expressed as the number of perforation holes per two centimetres. The gauge measurement is one of the primary tools for distinguishing different printings, varieties, and reissues of the same stamp design — a difference of half a gauge unit can separate a common stamp from a major rarity.
